Tom Torley is a tuba player, organist, and music director with a passion for expanding the reach of brass playing and engaging new audiences through inclusive musical experiences. He holds a BMus (Hons) and MPerf from the Royal College of Music, where he studied tuba and piano as a scholar. During his time at the RCM, he trained with leading brass professors, including the principal tuba players of the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, and Philharmonia, and worked closely with renowned accompanist Kathron Sturrock.
As a performer, Tom has appeared as a soloist with the Havant Symphony Orchestra and the Southgate Symphony Orchestra, playing the tuba concertos of Gregson and Vaughan Williams. He has held principal tuba positions with the Royal Orchestral Society, Westminster Philharmonic, and Bromley Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the RCM Symphony Orchestra under esteemed conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Antonio Pappano, and Vladimir Ashkenazy. He has also played in sessions at Abbey Road Studios with the National Symphony Orchestra and previously performed at the BBC Proms with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain under the baton of Sir Mark Elder.
Alongside his work as a performer, Tom is a dedicated conductor and music director. He has led the Royal College of Music Student Union Orchestra and Choir, conducted Borehamwood Brass Band and Richmond Brass Band, and directed the Sir William Borlase Grammar School Wind Orchestra. Since 2019, he has been Director of Music and Organist at St Paul’s, Grove Park, where he conducts the choir and curates its music program.
Tom is also an experienced and enthusiastic educator, having taught beginners to advanced players privately for over eight years. He has worked as a workshop leader with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal College of Music Sparks programme, and the National Youth Orchestra Inspire programme, bringing music to new audiences through outreach and education.
As Artistic Director of the Chiswick Brass Festival, Tom oversees the festival’s musical programming, bringing together top-tier musicians and ensembles to deliver high-quality performances that celebrate a diverse range of styles and traditions. His commitment to accessibility, artistic excellence, and audience engagement shapes the festival’s unique identity as a cultural highlight in West London.
